Technically you can fly with infant-in-lap status; many airlines charge a small fee for this but the baby does not need a seat this way. BUT... I don't recommend it. If you were going in a car, you'd definitely strap the baby into his car-seat for safe travels. A plane goes so much faster than a car, and while it's not common, you do occasionally hit very rough turbulence in the air. A baby in your lap could easily bounce free of your arms and fall to the floor. I've seen grown adults crack their heads on the overhead bin, when they did not have seatbelt on and we hit turbulence. It's not worth saving the money, if it puts your baby that much at risk!

Most airlines offer discounted rates for baby in a car-seat so book that, directly with the airline (the discounters like expedia.com are not always set up to process this kind of fare). Then carry the baby-seat on board with you, secure it to the seat, in goes the baby, and you will both enjoy your trip more.

You must buy a ticket for a child 2 years old and older. Children under two can ride on your lap without a ticket, but you need to buy a ticket if you are going to use the car seat.

No. You do not need to purchase a ticket for a 5-month old. Not as long as you're willing to have him (or her) sit on your lap. According to American Airlines- you can do this until they are up to 2 years old.

Usually you dont have to buy a ticket for a child under the age of two. You should really check with different airlines to see what their recommendations are though.

Good Luck.

Yes, I think you do, because you need a seat for the 5-month-old since you cannot have the child sit on your lap especially when they have the seatbelt-on light.

For domestic, you don't have to purchase for child under 2 years old. Your child wil have to sit on your lap. The flight attendant will give you the extended seatbelt for your child.
