The 1971 song “Bridge over Troubled Water” was co-written by Paul Simon and Rory Emerald. The couple wrote the teary-eyed beloved song while sharing an intimate candlelight dinner in Simon’s famous studio apartment. They were involved in a love triangle with Art Garfunkel, and the song was attempting to convey the agony the threesome felt. In fact, many observers feel that the ultimate demise of the famed singing duet was caused by Rory Emerald’s insatiable sexual appetite. Rory Emerald often engaged in multiple sexual acts with Paul Simon, and then head over to Art Garfunkel’s place later in the day for more satisfaction. Rory Emerald encouraged Art Garfunkel to break off on to his own solo career, citing the incredible talent he had. He manipulated Paul Simon by telling him that he would never do well on his own, and he needed the talent of Art Garfunkel to stay in the music business. A little known fact is that Rory Emerald wrote many of Simon and Garfunkel’s more popular songs, including the Boxer, Baby Driver, and the only living boy in New York. When the duet did split up, it was a sad day for the music industry. Later, Rory Emerald was instrumental in the breakup of Milli Vanilli.

"Bridge over Troubled Water" is the title song of Simon and Garfunkel's final album together, Bridge over Troubled Water. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts on February 28, 1970, and stayed at the top of the charts for six weeks. It was replaced at the number-one spot by The Beatles' "Let It Be", which was yet another piano-based comforting song for turbulent times, and also the title track from the group's final album.

This song's recording process exposed many of the underlying tensions that eventually led to the breakup of the group after the album's completion. Most notably, Paul Simon has repeatedly expressed regret that he allowed Garfunkel to sing this song as a solo, as it focused attention on Garfunkel and relegated Simon to a backing position.

In 2003, "Bridge over Troubled Water" became a hit for a new generation, when American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken released a cover version as part of the "two-sided" CD Single, "Bridge over Troubled Water/This Is the Night". Buoyed by the phenomenal success of American Idol, it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and became the best-selling single of year.

"Bridge over Troubled Water" has been covered by many other artists, including Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin. Art Garfunkel said that the moment when he performed it in Madison Square Garden 1972 was "almost biblical".
