You should say in advance, "I have purchased airline tickets starting on the 21st (or whatever)" and that ought to cover it. Or work out with a co-worker to trade one of his/her days off for one of yours. If you start lying, and calling in sick when you are not, no one will believe you when you really are sick (or have problems with the baby, or whatever).

There are some ways explained below.

=> Your Mom( or Dad or Husband ) is sick and you need to go with him.( Dont tell about your child.. Cause suppose you get call from your office and if child picks up the call then it will ruin everything)

=> Even if you are sick then also sometime due to emergency they might ask you to come office just for a hour or two.. In this situation .. you need to act like that you are really sick... like Headache, Stomach ace, ( On phone.. .. Do NOT make them take you to office.)

=> In some situation if you go to office then... Pick some medicines with you ... after reaching office say them that you need to take them after every few hours...

=> The best sentence is " I am sick... Please , I can make it today "

THIS ARE SOME TRICKS THAT I HAVE TRIED IN MY OFFICE.. MOST OF TIME IT WORKED OUT( Not every time)

Just try it out.

seriously, as a manager and supervisor of others for a long time...no matter what excuse you give they will know that you are only calling out b/c you requested off and didn't get it.
the moment you call in they will accept the excuse, but will remember that you asked off and will know that not only are you skipping out on work, but that you're a liar too.

i would just be honest with them and tell your supervisor that you requested off, you didn't get it, but you have non-refundable tickets for a vacation which will cost you more than what you'd make at that day of work.
offer to make up the time whenever they need you, even if it's a time you don't normally work. this will show that you don't want to shirk your responsibilities and it will show them that your vacation is obviously important to you.

if you insist on lying and calling out, then i would say that calling in sick is your best bet.
call in and say that YOU are sick...no one else.
if you say car trouble...they will most likely still expect you to make it in.
if you make up some elaborate thing, then they will question it in their mind of the validity.
people call out sick all the time, so another call out won't be abnormal.

just be prepared for someone to mention it to you when you return, b/c they will probably put 2 & 2 together....

have fun on your vacation.

It really depends how many days your are requesting. According to some megazine research most used excuse is "my car broke down" but obviously you can not use such excuses in your case, if you are requesting couple of days. In my opinion best excuse more than 2 days would be "a medical excuse" , just say your have terrible cold and want to take some days off untill you fully recover..
(P.S..don't let your boss see this question :)

As an employer, I prefer honesty and will more than likely do what I can to accommodate you if you just explain your situation. However, if it gets back to me that you're lying, I'm not going to look favorably on you for pretty much anything after that. We understand that things come up but when you just call off, it makes things more difficult for the rest of the staff that has to take up for the slack of your being gone, especially if someone else was authorized to have that day off.

Aliens just landed and they wont let you leave the house for 24 hours.

Another good one is your kitchen just caught on fire and your still putting it out. It makes you look like a real good employee that will take the time to call while your **** burns down.

If you've already made the decision to lie about why you're not there, simply tell them that you have to attend to a personal matter and leave it at that. Just be courteous enough to call them as early as possible if they will need time to get someone to cover your shift.
