I feel it may have to do with a cultural thing.
Football, basketball, and baseball have tradition and roots in the American culture. As a result, much time has been invested in promoting the sport, attracting and recruiting talent, and incorporating technology to advance the sport.
I feel that soccer is relatively new to America. The soccer fan base is probably not as solid and committed with, say, the basketball group. But then again, all this can change as more exposure of this sport is made in the media, and popular events like FIFA and the Olympics take place.

Here are the simple facts. All US kids play soccer at one point in their life. More US kids play soccer than any other sport. They start at about 4 years old. Go to anytown in the USA and you will see thousands of little kids playing soccer. Why do you think we have had elections that were swayed by "soccer moms". Parents like the game as it needs little equipment and is supposedly safe. When boys reach sixth grade, at 11-12 years old, the get bored with the game and switch to the more contact sports like basketball, football, and baseball. Any kid with athletic ability will move to these sports as they see how much money the players make. Yes soccer players make big money in Europe but in the US they don't make much of a living. This leave the less talented athletes in soccer. Our girls continue to play soccer because they do not have any other outlets. That is why we have won the women's world cup. If our best male athletes went into soccer we would also dominate this sport.

I believe it's becuase we do not have a quality league to watch all the time. My friend had never watched a soccer game before, so I made him watch the Germany-Costa Rica game, and now he's hooked on the World Cup. The MLS is getting better, but not have a leageu like the Premiership or the Bundisliga hurts America's interest in soccer. Since the World Cup is every four years, we don't really have any soccer to watch between then, except for when ESPN shows Champions League games.

I have thought about this quite often. Here my version (I am an American living in Germany who played soccer in America 35 years ago in an organized league):
The roots of the problem are in the media. If you look at the various "popular" sports (football, basketball, baseball, hockey) they all have LOTS of breaks (aka commercial time). The major networks discovered this years ago. On the other hand, consider soccer - no time-outs ! The other factor is the extreme money that US athletes make. This attracts good all-around athletes to sports other than soccer (talent pool) Factor 3 is surely the tradition part of it all.
All in all, it's not the fact that American's don't like soccer - they just don't appreciate it.
BTW - the US women were world-champs.

America is fat and uneducated. I recently had a softball coach tell me soccer wasn't a running sport. I quit the team and I now play soccer a lot more, without that idiot ruining my atheletic career.

Because you don't have to be 6 foot 3 and weigh 300 pounds to play. Even a skinny wheasel can be good at football it's all about technique.
