9/13/2004 - Donated as a promotional event...Here are details;

The launch of the G6 was a major publicity stunt: 276 of the cars were famously given away to audience members of The Oprah Winfrey Show on the talk show's fall 2004 season premiere. This promotion garnered international attention, a reported US$110 million in publicity, and put the G6, a previously unknown name, solidly on the lists of many shoppers.

One of the show's features in recent years has been the "Wildest Dreams" tour, which fulfills the dreams of many deserving people reported to her producers by friends and family, be the dream a new house, an encounter with a favourite performer, or a guest role on a popular TV show.

During her nineteenth season premiere, Oprah surprised her entire audience by giving them each a Pontiac G6. It was named as one of the greatest television moments in history by TV Guide. Although Oprah may be given credit for giving the cars away, they were donated to her by Pontiac by means of a publicity stunt. Another highlight was in 2005 when Tina Turner guest starred, allowing Desperate Housewives star, Felicity Huffman to fulfil her Wildest Dream of singing back up to the Queen of Rock herself.

That's because the mostly new 2005 G6 made a flashy appearance on her show — seen by more than 15 million viewers daily in 132 countries — as a giveaway Sept. 13

Every game show, contest etc. that gives away cars are usually donated by the sponsor and the recipients DO know prior to accepting the cars the deal with taxes, cash payout etc. To assume Oprah didn't do the same thing is preposterous.. Do some research and stop the hating. Every time someone tries to do something good for people they get criticized. So what if she did it to look good? I don't think those people driving those new cars care one way or another why she did it. I am sure they would all tell you that.

Leave Oprah alone. Its not like anyone else with that kind of money is putting 250 Hurricane Katrina victims families in furnished NEW homes with thier own money. Sure it makes her look good but it would make anyone look good to do the things that she does. Why all the bad mouthing?

Pontiac donated them.

Pretty expensive promotion but notice that you remember the brand. Maybe they got their money's worth.
