As the Internet is a global network with it reaching most parts of the world should we create an online government and set down a universal Internet Constitution to protect the rights of all the people that wish to connect

And what should the basic rights be?
Please think about making them as inclusive as possible so they do not discriminate against the majority of the World

Why do people hear the word government and connect it to censorship or taxes?
The question is simple what laws could we as the users of the internet agree upon that would protect the rights of us all. Thing like everyone has the right to surf the net without threats or attacks upon our beliefs.
Or am I the only person that believes in true democracy

We don't need more government...got too darn much already. First they will want to do is impose taxes and I already pay too much.

By the way; when you get China and its people on board let me know.

We don't need a government to run the Internet. If one was to try and control what is done and the way it is done, we don't need that.

The first thing a government would want to do is initiate a tax system and not necessarily for the benefit of the users.

Look at how our current government waste and spend money on everything except what it is suppose to.

One example a senator from Alaska got it on a bill and it passed to spend over several million dollars on a bridge that will serve at 50 people or less.

Do you really want that. After the first couple of round of elected officials the new ones coming in would forget the overall objective and why the Internet was set up.

Then there would be user fees, information processing tax, information seeking tax, and things that we can not imagine.

Do you think when the father's of our country set up our government there were no taxes, the government closed down for the summer. You say things have changed and they need the extra time. Look at the number of days they are off now I have came to the conclusion that they still have the same number of days off.

We don't need any form of government for the net, it works OK the way it is.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

There are two basic fundamentals being challenged here.

1. The Constitution of the United States is not a suicide pact...Arthur Goldberg, former Ambassador to the United Nations once stated.

2. The basic right of freedom of speech and expression. That right to free speech is the very first amendment because without that basic right, there would never be any other right to be to be enacted or properly enforced.

So, where do we begin. The right to freedom of speech vs. the security of the nation. the United States of America, that is authorized and often challenged to protect that right...Hmmmm-interesting question.

The President of the United States is in charge of the Internet. There are voices being heard around the world that would like to have the United Nations take over the Internet.

So, in essence, we do have an Internet Constitution. It was written in 1787.

I've always thought that it's crazy that the service providers who host a website aren't responsible for the conduct of the clients they take money from, or put more clearly, if Mr A. or Company B. want to run a website, it's 'content contributor' should be legally recorded, and they would be the only person with the relevant access-codes and passwords to post material on the site.
Then the hosting company needs to vet and classify the content, much like a new movie.
Result? Truly safe info and entertainment sites for children, 'acceptable' porn sites for 'adults', if they must, and no posted viruses, worms, adware/spyware, 'snuff-films' and brutality, or child-porn. Simple!

That sounds like censorship and a government run internet. My oh my, that would sure ruin a good thing. I don't need my government telling me what is in my best interest on the internet. Besides, in order to protect all people and not offend anyone, there would be one page on the entire internet, probably just a geographic globe with time zones for us to click on.

I'm always amazed at how illegal sites dealing with violence and child porn are able to accept credit cards (which is how offending users are tracked).

They should make the various Visa and Mastercard agencies culpable in illegal setups like this and such sites would disappear overnight. The users of them are sick but the owners are just interested in money.

Not at all. Let the freedom, live at least on internet, though already a lot of your info is already beingg recorded, and used by law-enforcing agencies. This is not a good idea.

Harsh penalties for email spammers and phishers;
Harsh penalties for sites that have pop ups and put malware on your system.
Harsh penalties for anyone caught doing anything involving pedophilia
Harsh penalties for anyone making crackz or otherwise hacking and stealing.
Other than that, this needs to be a place of security while exercising our freedom of thought, expression and speech.
