We bought it in Galvaston and drove an hour to our house in Katy.
It isn't moving and a couple of legs have fallen off.
It's very little so I don't know if it is moulting.
It belongs to my 5-year-old sister so I can't just leave it I need to know if it is dead now.

Dropping of legs is a sure sign of extreme stress and dehydration. He is more than likley going to die. When a crab moults normally they do not do so in pieces but as a whole.. and the limbs and body would then be hollow (you can tell by crushing it in your fingers)
Yes a moulting crab does seem dead many times prior during and even after moulting... the sure sign and really only 100% sign is the strong odor of rotting fish flesh.. you will know when you smeel it. Sometimes it will take awhile to smell tho.
You will have to leave it, because throwing out a live creature is just wrong. Hermit Crabs are not simple starter novelty pets but need very exact and specific habitat conditions and certinatly are not good for a 5 year old, unless of course the adult will monitor temp, humidity etc. If you(or whomever is in charge) does not provide the proper temps and humidity ranges, the proper substrate in an aquarium tank with solid lid and de-chlor water and salt water the crab will die anyway. I would suggest to go to the links I have includded below for good tips and help as well as caresheets etc. You will then learn that hermit crabs are not as simple and cheap as one would think they are.

1st of all when they're molting they often appear completely lifeless, the surest sign is smell... They have a very rotten smell when they've died in their shells and sat for a few days...

there body turns a different color and when you pick it up it falls out

pick it up stick your finger in it and then if nothing happens then smell it.
