Windows Media player will play almost every file out there, including your DVDs.
iTunes is ok, but I am like you, and only want to use one player, so I picked Windows Media Player (be sure to get the latest release: v.11 I think).

iTunes and WMP. I freeking hate RealPlayer. They were caught transmitting information from personal computers and had to be sued to stop. And I hate how they hide the free player link away in a corner of their site.

RealPlayer is evil; (unless they've changed their ways,) you can't even use it without consenting to have your identity & computer assimilated.
Keep either of the other two; although I'm biased toward iTunes.

iTunes DOSE NOT mess with a user's files and anyone who tells you differently is doing something wrong. I've used all of the above and iTunes is by far superior; that is, if you know what you're doing.
