My husband chain smokes non-filtered cigs and has for years. We got pregnant without even trying, so I highly doubt it.

You prpbably need to talk to a doctor about this. You may not be having sex when you're ovulating...or maybe he has a low sperm count...there are way too many factors to list. Smoking generally doesn't affect sperm count, but once you do get pregnant he MUST stop smoking for the health of your baby. My father smoked like a chimney when my mother was pregnant with my brother and when she was pregnant with me (and then both of my parents smoked-and still smoke-while raising us) and my brother and I both have multiple health problems caused by second hand smoke.
But you should see a doctor if you've been trying to get pregnant for more than six months and still can't conceive.

There is definitely a relation between Smoking and Pregnancy Issues. It is not the case that Smokers can not get pregnancy but yes, it affects the capability in both ways, Sperm count as well as Sperm strength.
But one more point to mention, this effect is not once and for all. quiting smoking and keeping away from it do help in rebuilding sperm count as well as strength.

Smoking has a very negative effect on both the number and quality of sperm produced by the testis.
In the majority of studies which have compared men who smoke against those who do not, the men who smoke have lower sperm counts (and sometimes motility).
Additionally, as smoking is very toxic to the genetic make up of all cells (hence causes cancer) it has a particularly negative effect on sperm (sperm have no way of repairing any damage to their genetic material).
In men who smoke there is a higher level of genetic damage in the sperm and importantly a much higher miscarriage rate if their partners get pregnant.
Moreover, it takes at least six months to a year to get pregnant.

I don't think smoking can affect the sperm. My husband smokes almost three packs a day and I had one child and am pregnaut for another one. So maybe he doesn't have a high sperm count. Maybe you should go see a specialist.

It could be. My husband and I were both pack-a-day smokers when I became pregnant, and we didn't have any problems conceiving. Same thing for my second child (I started smoking again after the first one was born, and I didn't have any problems conceiving him, either.

Smoking can decrease sperm counts. Tell him to quit. he will need to when you have a baby anyway.
