ya know slavery was ok under the american flag as well, before the civil war, so if you are going to say a flag can be a symbol of racism then id say youd have to include the amrican flag as well considering it was flown over slave owning soil for some 100 years or so before the civil war, the founding fathers owned slaves as well, so to call the confederate flag a racist symbol and not consider also that the american flag was flown for years over the same soil is hypocritical, and if you also consider that slavery wasnt an issue of the war until the emancipation proclamation in 1865, which did not legally free a single slave, only an amandment to the constitution years later did, then id say slavery and racism are non-issues when discussing the flags

The flag itself was not a racist symbol, but it has been made such by groups like the KKK. Many people erroneously believe that this flag was the official flag of the confederate states. It was not. It was one of many battle flags.

I live in the south, and I have seen people use this flag with racist intentions. For these reasons, I don't feel comfortable using this flag as a symbol of my southern heritage. I am proud to be southern, but I don't want to associate with racism.

It has become one to many people, though it was not originally designed that way. Many use it to symbolize different Southern ideologies, but in reality, it's just a flag that symbolized the Confederate States' union. A pre-existing symbol was not race-oriented until people associated it with a racial ideology. So in and of itself, it's not.

I'll probably get in trouble with some of the more politically correct for saying this but no... none of the flags of the former Confederate States of America are racist.

Only a very small portion of southerners were ever slave owners. Most were too poor. The wealthy plantation owners were slave holders and many of them were European immigrants.

Slavery was then, now and forever wrong but the Civil War was about more than just slavery.

The confederate flag along with the swastika are just symbols. It is the intent of some groups that have hijacked these symbols though, which have given the perception to the public at large that they are associated with racist beliefs.

I think racism is in the eye of the beholder. Some see the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery. Some see it as a symbol of states' rights, others as a symbol of pride in their region, others as a symbol of white supremacy.

I think its just like anything else in life...its what you make of it. I was born and raised in the Middle Ga. and I feel that it is a part of my southern heritage, and American history. Some people use it as a racial tool, both blacks and whites. I think the fact we had to change our state flag was B.S., but on our new flag is a picture of our old flag (just smaller) , its still there, but people were screaming race issues, once again, its what u make of it, and its history for me.

Yes, even if you are from the South as I am. It is also a historical symbol. But the main meaning behind the symbol is slavery and racism.

No .....but some racists use it as one. Before the war it was to be the flag of a separate country from the union.
