easy one...read Kim Stanley Robinson's trilogy about the settlement of Mars. He really did a lot of research for these books & some of his terraforming & "aeroforming" (terraforming the atmosphere) ideas are revolutionary. He also touches on gerontological treatments to greatly extend human life. The first book in the series is called Red Mars, followed by Green Mars, then finally Blue Mars.

Kim Stanley Robinson is good, but I liked Peter Hamilton's Nights Dawn Trilogy, just for the brilliance of the idea, how far he ran with it, and how detailed his universe was.
Also The Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson, again well thought out, and unrivalled for sheer nastiness.
