I never thought of GnR as "Hair Metal" but some people might put them in that category for two reasons:
1) Slash has hair down to his butt.
2) They emerged in the late 80's when hair bands ruled the radio dial.

Guns & Roses is not a hair metal band - they aren't really a metal band.
They are more of a hard rock rolling stones type bands. Sure they had a couple of hard and heavy songs; but they also had a Elton John type song or two - November Rain - Don't Cry.
Bascially, I'd throw them into the category of Hard Rock.

I hate that lame "Hair Metal" tag. It's not even a genre , it's a name people threw at it when they started to mock it. ANd you notice NOBODY dare threw AC / DC in that lump, hey! they had hair too! wtf?! people are sheep , they just copy some phrase that some idiot music critic mentioned, that's all..

yes they are hard rock but they are not metal ! and i wouldn't categorize them as a hair band.
