I have three gerbils. I don't think there is a way to get them to use a litter box just change their change once a week. Don't use a big plastic cage because they get too hot in there and it's life will be shorter a metal wire cage kinda like a bird cage is excellent. They will notice that you are the one who feeds them and will like you play with them often. Gerbils unlike hamsters like to have more than one in their cage with them. They like to chew on paper and stuff an inexpensive way to entertain them is give them your left over toilet paper and paper towel rolls, the cardboard inside. They love to chew on those but it becomes a bit loud at night. Hope that helps.

They make hamster litter, so similar animals probably do the same thing. With my dwarf hamster, I put some of her 'waste' in the litter box with the fresh litter, and I think she was using it, at least some of the time. She didn't live a whole lot longer after that, so I'm not entirely sure. She was about 2+ years old.

Ever since the Richard Geer incident they have been very afraid of men. If you are a man put on a dress when you play with them and talk in a high falsetto voice. That should put them at ease.

Get a great big litter box, and then you go in the litter box, showing them how to do it. That will work for that.

Give them beer. They'll love you forever.

While I don't know if they can be liter box trained, I can answer your question of "to make them trust you".

Very simply put: being gentle and being kind to them will earn you their trust.

Enjoy your pets.
