I have an almost 3 week old baby girl, and for the past 7 days, she has been throwing up, once a day. The doctor has done multiple CBCs, and her blood count has been up (given medication to make it go down), down, and now back up. She had a blood culture to check for bacteria, nothing showed. The poor girl has been poked and prodded for a week now, and the stress and worry is starting to get to me!! Has anyone been through anything similar?

She is breastfed... would reflux affect her blood count though? When it was up he gave her an antibiotic shot that brought it back down.

I feel for you. It is stressful enough just getting used to a 3 week old baby. Maybe you could get a second opinion as to what could be causing her to always throw up. breastmilk is the best you can give her so don't give up. Formula would be 100 times worse if she were given that. Good luck and hang in there.

Is she growing normally? If her weight gain is OK, then spitting up or even vomitting only once a day will not harm her. The average baby spits up 2-4 times a day, so she's actually not doing too bad. In fact, the baby may be 100% normal.

The term "reflux" means a lot of different things to different people. What it really means is something going the wrong direction. So any baby spitting up is "refluxing". Whether the reflux is pathologic (due to some disease) is really what's important. And that can be ruled out by a good history and physical, and sometimes tests.

CBC's and blood cultures, though, are not normally part of the workup for a baby who spits up, though. Maybe I just don't have enough information but I am skeptical of giving the baby "medication to make it go down" - (I'm assuming "it" refers to the white blood cell count) - is this an antibiotic they are treating the baby with? What are they treating? A white blood cell count can be as high as 30,000 in newborns (which makes it a horrible test), whereas in adults it is usually 12,000 or less.

If the baby is growing well there may be nothing wrong. If the baby's weight gain in not good, then other tests (like an upper G.I. series to rule out pathologic causes of reflux) and/or trial of medication may be indicated.

Again, I would be careful in suggesting that the doctor is doing something wrong, because maybe I don't have enough information. Is the doctor a pediatrician or a family doctor who is very comfortable seeing babies? If not, maybe a referral to a pediatrician or pediatric G.I. doctor would put us all at ease.

I was is child birth class with a girl that ended up having a little girl with severe acid reflux and projectile vomiting. when she spit up it flew across the room. she was put on meds and also had a change in formula to decrease the stomach upset. Keep with the drs and make sure they continue until they get her helped. I know the last thing you want is to see your baby being poked and messed with all the time but keep telling yourself that it is to help her, my son was born with a heart murmur and once a month I have to watch him be hooked up to a thousand monitors and screens and they hold him down to get the heart images they need, I cry still every time but I try to tell myself this is not to hurt him, its to help. Good Luck! and may god bless you and yours with health and happiness!!

my sister had that problem with her little boy - it turns out he had acid reflux and they put him on meds for acid reflux. He also ate too fast (8 oz bottle in 5 minutes), and that would cause the start of it. I am not sure if either of these fit, but that is the only situation I know of!

Good luck to you and your little one!

i agree about the acid reflux there are meds for that or you could try changing her formula if she isnt breastfed but i warn you some of the formula for digestive problems is a small fortune

Are you giving her formula at all? I know you said you were breastfeeding but if you are supplementing with formula at all it could be acid refluxor it could be a lactose intolerance. Sounds like she is doing the very same thing my son did. We had to put him on a soy formula because he was lactose intolerant, meaning he couldn't digest the regular milk. Hope this helps, good luck!

It probably is acid reflux. Maybe take her to a different doctor.
