Have tried everything to get my computer back up (I'm using the one at work now!). Have DSL, won't connect to internet. Tried old dial-up, will connect but that's it, can't do anything. Want to crash it and start over - how do I do this. I've tried the restore/repair disc, no luck. Someone help!!

I had done a defrag when this all started. Tried to restore back and nothing happened! I've done everything now but blow it up!

Hmm sounds like a virus problem. Have you done a scan lately? You might want to scan your computer. How far did you restore it? You need to go to Control Panel, then Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools. There is a system restore option in that folder. You might want to try a restore to a date when your computer was actually working correctly.

The other method is to reformat. You can just reinstall windows again and it will format your hard drive and you can start fresh. It will wipe all viruses and it will make your computer brand new. But you will need to back up your data before you do this.

Problems with connecting to the internet generally are as a result of either iof the following:

-incorrect connections of all lines (ie. one side of phone line should be in phone socket and another into the modern card for normal dial-up connections).

-The modern card is not properly connected into the slot (push quite firmly down until you can hear it ''click'') Normally once this has been done correctly the computer should automatically detect it and providing your OS system has not been upgraded recently or the modern did not originally come with your computer the drivers to enable the functioning of it should automatically install.

- If the drivers do not automatically install then either of the following options are available to you:

-There may be an 'upgrade' option under the 'drivers' section of the 'software' section of your modern's manufacturers site

- Failing that you would have to search for the specific driver by following those links, excluding the 'upgrade' one obviously.

If you are still unsure as to whether the modern has been properly installed or not and the necessary drivers then follow these steps:

-start
-My Computer
-right click on to 'c' drive or whichever corresponding drive
- Then look down the list of hard-drive components until you can find your modern
- When you have found it double-click and then click properties tab
- Then click to 'view drivers' and 'update' and check to make sure that has been done properly.

If your computer still fails to sign on then perhaps look at other attributing factors aside from modern

If it is still not working and you have firmly ascertained that is is not a modern problem then perhaps re-install your ISP software and make sure also that if you have a voicemail on your phone line that is is not blocked with messages and that you have disabled call waiting as this can interrupt connections. Also make sure that you have indicated the right type of dial tone. All these options will be available under the 'setup' part of your ISP start-up and should automatically initiate providing the software has been properly installed.

Another problem you could look into if you are purely wanting to connect with DSL that the drivers for normal dialup are either disabled or removed and that the drivers for DSL are the only ones on the system otherwise they could conflict and this could evoke connection issues. The best way of ensuring that the driver is correctly disabled is by using the setup software for the driver as this should have a 'uninstall driver' option.

Once you have tried these options I am optamistic the problem should resolve itself.

Hope this has helped

Any further problems let me know and ill try my best to further assist

well, can you give a little more information? Did it work before? When you did the restore/repair, which did you do? If you just got DSL and are trying to install it, did you follow the instructions exactly? You have to begin the software installation prior to installing the network card.
