The story of Merlin
Merlin is a creature born of pagan magic, living in a world converting to Christianity.
The story begins with young Merlin being schooled in magic by the evil sorceress, Mab, and her apprentice, Frik. Merlin ultimately rejects her tutelage setting up a war between them which leads to her attack on Arthur. Unwittingly, Arthur impregnates his own half-sister, Morgan Le Fey, which leads to the birth of Mordred, an evil son who ultimately destroys Camelot. Merlin also unwittingly leads to Camelot's destruction when he selects Lancelot to protect Guinevere based on mistaken information he gains from The Lady In The Lake.Through it all, Merlin tries to keep Arthur from the destructive path set by fate.
This is what what we know about the character Merlin
Merlin is one of the major figures in Arthurian legend.
Merlin is a magician who protects and counsels the young King Arthur.Merlin wasenchanter and wise man in Arthurian legend and romance of the Middle Ages, linked with personages in ancient Celtic mythology (especially with Myrddin in Welsh tradition). He appeared in Arthurian legend as an enigmatic figure, fluctuations and inconsistencies in his character being often dictated by the requirements of a particular narrative or by varying attitudes of suspicious regard toward magic and witchcraft. Thus, treatments of Merlin reflect different stages in the development of Arthurian romance itself.
Early in the 13th century, Robert de Borron's verse romance Merlin added a Christian dimension to the character, making him the prophet of the Holy Grail (whose legend had by then been linked with Arthurian legend). The author of the first part of the Vulgate cycle made the demonic side of Merlin's character predominate, but in later branches of the Vulgate cycle, Merlin again became the prophet of the Holy Grail, while his role as Arthur's counsellor was filled out; it was Merlin, for example, who advised Uther to establish the knightly fellowship of the Round Table and who suggested that Uther's true heir would be revealed by a test that involved drawing a sword from a stone in which it was set. It also included a story of the wizard's infatuation with the Lady of the Lake, which eventually brought about his death.
Personally I tink Merlin is way cool and one of the more special wizards off all times !

There is a made for tv movie called Merlin starring Sam Niel as merlin. It's the Arthurian legend but told strictly from Merlin's perspective and it gives his back story. It's a pretty good movie and you can probably rent it and I'm sure you could order it on E bay or Amazon.com. Another good source is the movie Excalibur. Also the musical Camelot (which was loosely in reference to the Kenedy white house) are good. The recent film King Arthur has a different take on the story, but it's not all that great.
His part in the story is he had the plan for unifying england onder one king. He tried to guide Uther Pendragon, but Uther fell in lust with another king's wife. Merlin disguised Uther to look like king #2 so he could have the woman with the understanding that the child would belong to Merlin.
Merlin allowed the boy to be raised by a knight until he was old enough to become king and when Arthur got around the right age is when you have the sword in the stone story, from which time Merlin guides Arthur into becomong a good king. But Arthur is betrayed by his best friend and first Knight Lancelot du Lac who has a love affir with Arthur's wife, the queen Guinivere then Arthur's half sister (king #2's daughter) seduces him and gives birth to Arthur's Nephew/Son Mordrid who challenges Arthur to uphold the law by condemming Guinevere and Lancelot to death. Arthur is torn and so is the kingdom and Mordrid is able to start a war in which he and Arthur kill each other. Merlin gets tricked into a trap and isn't there to help out until it's too late.

He was Arthur Pendragon's advisor and court wizard (wise man). He helped Arthur's dad Uther have a little pre-marital sex with Arthur's mum, the wife of the Duke of Cornwall, and then took the baby to be raised as a fosterling by Kay, a minor lord. Depending on the myth arc you are following, he was either the possessor of great magic, afflicted by occasional touches of god, or just this guy with more sense than the average Brit of those days.
He either died, was frozen in sleep, or retired to a cave, depending again on which book you read.
His nemesis was Nimue, who was either a witch or the Lady of the Lake or a priestess of the old religion or a combination of the above (depending).
Merlin is mostly remembered as the Deus ex Machina of the Camelot myth ... when something had to happen, and there was no logical way it could happen, Merlin made it happen.
Cheers.

Merlin was supposedly the wizard that taught King author everything he knew. He was the wizard council to the Round table of knights for King Arthur at Camelot.

Merlin is a magician. After Arthur's father, Uther, died, Merlin promised to take care of Arthur and his older brother Kay. When rebels seeked the land and asked Merlin where Arthur was (to kill the line of Uther's dynasty), Merlin had disappeared into thin air to protect Arthur. One day, to determine the king of the land, Merlin placed a sword in a magic stone with an inscription on it. Whoever pulled the sword out of the enchanted stone would become king. Many of the strongest men tried to pull the sword... but failed. Howvere, the young Arthur did. He thought he had done a crime and had given the sword to his brother Kay who was a cruel knight and cruel brother to Arthur. However, Arthur treated him with respect and looked up to him as the older brother he was. He gave Kay the sword because Kay was angry that Arthur, Kay's apprentice, forgot the sword Kay was supposed to use in the joust. So, Kay read the inscription on the sword (I think) and told people he had pulled out the sword. Arthur did not know that the sword had an inscription on it and that it was to be pulled out by ones who seeked to be king. Arthur knew he had been tricked and the townspeople claimed Kay the king. Merlin then reappeared and claimed Arthur as the king because he knew Kay had lied. And that's why King Arthur is... King Arthur. And also, that's why Merlin is so special. I hope this is more than enough information. :)

I think Merlin was that wizard from that movie "The Sword and the Stone". It was about a boy that was friends with the wiizard. The boy pulled the enchanted sword from the stone and became king. He was King Arthur of the round table.

Depending on where you look, you could find a thousand different answers for this question. In the story of King Arthur, Merlin was Arthur's Druid advisor. He was the one responsible for placing Excalibur in the stone.

He is the most powerful mage in mythology, King Arthur's Aide, and said to know the future because he lived backwards.
Contrary to popular belief, the sword in the stone is not Excalibur. Excalibur was given to King Arthur while he was king from Lady du luc (lady of the lake) and was returned to her when he dies.
