I am disappointed with the US team, however, I did not really expect a win from them. I was hoping for a draw, but felt that if they did draw, then the result would come off US capitalizing on a very uncharacteristic Czech opening.
Primarily, I felt the US didn't play their style and because of the questionable comments of their coach, Bruce Arena, they tried to set up more intelligently out of static balls. However, they were less intelligent in the end, because they didn't attack and that cost them the openings they normally find. So the real individual to blame is coach Arena. If you recall, a couple days ago, reports indicated that Coach Arena said to the US that they should emulate Holland. That was a mistake, because the US do not possess the talent or personnel to play such a style.
Also, the US should have played one more friendly and against a European team. They were primarily training against Concacaf and African Zone teams in playing Venezuela, Morocco, and a closed-doors match against Angola. They should have scheduled European matches to try to get a sense of the Czech side instead of just building false confidence to some degree. They could have better figured out their weaknesses and made adjustments rather than trying to be a team they really are not!
Lastly, I do not like the decision to play the 4-5-1. Donovan only lost a place in the formation. The US should have stuck with a 4-4-2 and Convey should not have started. He is an explosive, off the bench player...not a starter. He could have been the reenergizer. Instead, even though a slight injury concern, O'Brien should've started as he spreads the defense well. Convey is more of a striking midfielder, who brings energy, something the US needed when they went down. Trying to reenergize a team is not O'Brien's role. He plays better and with more confidence coming onto the pitch in the beginning. The other choices for defenders were good choices I felt except for Onyewu. Pope should've been on Koller from the beginning because he brings experience. Onyewu could have been more effective as a center back that doesn't necessarily mark an individual, at least initially, merely because of his inexperience...
Overall, the US made some big mistakes, but the bigger mistakes were strategic ones that could and should've been made prior to the game with the right friendlies being played, lineup decisions, and such coaching calls.

Real football IS soccer, Ruthinia. What you euphemistically call "football" is an excrescence, deservedly considered a very minor and provincial (known only in North America) sport.
And, who cares? Just about 5 BILLION people. Compare that to a paltry 50 million for your ludicrous "sport."

It was a pathetic start. The group is difficult to begin with but now we need to be Italy to advance and that's almost as long of a shot as beating the Czech Republic. Ugh.

I really don't like anyone to talk mean about USA. I am very disappointed but this isn't the end. You may never know what might happen next, anything that can happen will happen. Just like the Mavs. GO Mavs and USA.

Who cares! Its not exactly a national tragedy that they lost like it would be in a lot of other countries. We go on and wait for real football to start in September.
