"A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."

It means people do not accomplish great things overnight. They have to work at it, one step at a time- showing you that anyone who is willing to work at it, can get stuff done. It's the ones who give up before they try that never accomplish anything.

It means that NOBODY can carry away an entire mountain - at once. The task of moving a mountain is acheived by taking small pieces ( stones, dirt) out of and away from the mountain.

It means that a huge task can be done is a series of small steps.

to do something great like move a mountain, you must start my just moving one stone at a time. (Carrying away stones means slowly moving the earth of the mountain to another location)

This means that no large project or goal can be achieved all at once. No great effort at one time can "move mountains", or clean an entire house, or do a year's worth of financial statements, or whatever large project you're working on. You can, however, move an entire mountain "one stone at a time", by taking small steps moment by moment, day by day, and eventually you will have met your goal. Take any large goal and break it up into smaller steps that are easy to accomplish, and you can do ANYTHING!

It is saying that no matter how big a job is, you have to start small to succeed. You don't make a billion dollar company by just selling a billion dollars of product right from the beginning. You start by selling a few thousand dollars.
It is a metaphor for how to succeed in life.

Another similar saying is, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

The idea is that the completion of a small task followed by another and another and another eventually leads to the completion of a big task.
