We don't have anything like this in England and I'm curious about the whole event after watching a documentary called "Spellbound." I know a lot of Americans use this website so would love to hear your general opinion on the competition.

Yes, when I was younger I participated in a regional spelling bee. I lost horribly, but it was fun. It is actually a pretty high stress thing if you let it be. There is a lot of random crap to remember. Words of the English language you didn't know existed and that nobody uses. The English language is very complicated as far as phoenetics goes. You don't realize that to its fullest extent until you start trying to memorize obscure words. I found it enjoyable.

I was in a Regional here in Florida...There were so many kids, I really didn't stand a chance. I kept going though, it was pretty exciting hearing all those hard words and thinking "Ooo, I bet she gets out on that one" and things like that. But yeah, I didn't do all that great, and it was still a good learning experience. The competition is very difficult because there are so many kids and you could just get a lucky break and get an easy word, or you could get a word you've never heard before. I think that the prizes should be more, maybe I'm greedy, but it seems to me that athletic sports get more recognition and awards then the spelling bee. The prize for the NATIONAL spelling bee is very small compared to some of the athletic scholarships that colleges and even high schools give out.

Yes. I participated in the regional spelling bee among Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Germany when I was in the 6th grade. They gave me a list of about 50 pages of HORRIBLE words to remember. I actually enjoyed the challenge of learning all of these new words. I finished in the top 20 and won a dictionary. I find these sorts of competitions healthy and very educational. When it started out at the classroom level, we always divided up into two teams standing across the room from one another. And if a student missed a word, he would take his seat. The team with the last player standing would win. And our teacher was very cool and would give all of us a sucker or allow the winning team to choose what art activity we'd have the following day or whatever. Simple challenge that requires studying on the students part....but because it is presented as a game, the student takes it upon himself to study in order to win the game.
My 2nd year math teacher also did "Math Bees" in order to encourage us to learn our multiplication tables quickly and it was also well received.

Yes, I won the regional and went to the state. There was a book of words that we were supposed to study and memorize. I was stubborn and fed up and would not study any more, in spite of my mother's cajoling. I lost on the word "amalgamy". I think the word I won regional with was "mischievous".

No. Spelling correctly is fine and dandy, but I'd rather watch paint dry than brat-children spelling words. *Maybe I'll use the watching paint dry as a party game theme.*
