the transfer case in your truck is going to be a New Process 241.

its an aluminum case, chain driven and will take Dexron 3 ATF fluid.

you would never put motor oil in an old gear driven transfer case, you would use gear lube.

Open the glove box. Wonder briefly why you never see gloves in a glove box. Look for the book that came with the car new. Look in the index for transfer (not tranfer) case. Turn to the page it lists, and read.

If no book, walk into your favorite auto parts store. Ask, they will start doing things on the computer, and eventually tell you what it calls for. Get some. While you are out, stop at Wal-Mart and buy a pair of gloves. Put them in the glove box. It will run much better now with gloves in there.

absolutely possitiviley dexron 111 auto tranny fluid. They put auto trak fluid in 99 and newer gm but 89 is dexron 111. Some old 70's and early 80's used motor oil.
