i accidently dumped 2000+ fonts onto my desktop & now i can't delete them. i tried selecting and apple/delete-didn't work. i tried force quiting the finder-did nothing but relaunch with all the fonts again. the system is not frozen, but running really slow. i don't know what to do!

The reason why it slows your computer down is that the files system (Journaled HFS+) treats data on your desktop differently, and it has to do some processing. Consolidate your files to a single folder similar to mentioned above, and then delete them.

Open a new window (Apple N) in the Finder.
Navigate to your Harddisk/Users/Yourname/Desktop (easiest is if do this in column view)
Create a new Folder (shift Apple N).
Select View as List (Apple 2) and sort by kind.
Drag all the fonts to the new folder.
Rename the folder and drag it to where it belongs. Or delete it if you don't need those fonts.
P.S.
Next time this happens to you simply click Undo (Apple Z) !
