It depends on where in S. Africa but it is either 9 or 10 hours. S. Africa lies in between zones for some reason. You can check the Time Zone Map at the below address:

South Africa is always two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). California, however, is eight hours late from GMT in the winter, and seven hours late in the summer when daylight saving time is adopted. So in the summer, SA is nine hours ahead of California, and in the winter it is ten hours ahead of California.
