I am wondering about the font size so I can see how large the book I am writing will be. I am talking in terms of microsoft word.

My dad, who is self-publishing a novel, says that most books are done in 12-point type. Of course, the size of the pages makes a difference. (Cheap paperbacks, especially sci-fi, tend to use 10-point or even 8-point, but since you mentioned hardcover I assume you're not writing a cheap paperback.)
(Note to all the correction artists out there: I did not say all paperbacks are cheap.)

8 to10 point would be my guess.There are thousands of different typefaces, each unique to the job. This will also help determine the font size for the body copy of the book.
