My daughter is 13 months. She still gets baby food (3rd foods) and baby rice cereal. What are some good foods to start feeding her? I don't want her to choke, that's my biggest fear! (first time mom) I want her to get proper nutrition also. Please advise!

First of all, understand what is meant by choking. When someone coughs up a piece of food that started going down the windpipe, we call it "choking", but this is *not* what is dangerous for a baby (uncomfortable, maybe...). It is a problem when a piece of food starts going down the windpipe and the baby *can't* cough it up. Foods that are choking hazards are firm, hard, or sticky and the size of baby's windpipe. Examples are grapes, raw carrot chunks, or peanut butter from a spoon.

You can cut grapes in half (so that they are softer and could be coughed up), grate the carrot, and spread the peanut butter on a piece of bread or a cracker to give the same foods without the choking hazard.

You can give her anything you eat, within reason. There are certain things she absolutely can't have...honey, sword fish, and a few other things, but I can't remember what. www.babycenter.com can fill you in! However, like I said, you can give her anything within reason that you're eating...most vegetables, potatoes, chicken, hamburger, etc. Just make sure you cut it into tiny bites before giving it to her. Peanut butter probably isn't a good idea as it may glue her mouth shut and she could choke. My 11 month old is still mostly on stage 3 foods, but there have been a few nights when he had "human" food (lol) for dinner, along with the reast of the family. Oh, and nothing spicy. (for obvious reasons!)

Small foods that aren't difficult to chew. Cheerio's, those baby cookies that dissolve quickly, mashed potatoes, soft fruits (peaches, etc.) cut into bite-sized pieces. As you start with this, you'll be able to see what she's able to handle.

My youngest son (now 9) could eat anything I handed him. My oldest (now 13) choked on everything until he was like 6..I kid you not...he about gave me a heart attack several times. I didn't let him eat hard candy or cough drops until he was like 10!

You can start feeding her whatever you eat. Either cut it up extremely small or put it in a blender. Remember to always be with her when she is eating.

i gave my daughter toddler cuisines by del monte and i think gerber. they are in the baby food isle but they have plastic caps and are similar looking to soup on the go's they are usually pastas and soups but do soft things, friut ( bananas, apples, in slices, peaches, friut cocktail, cantalope, melons...ect.), veggis too because they wont like them unless you keep them in the cycle,( peas, grren beans , steamed carrots, mashed potatoes...ect) and meats, ( sandwich meat rolled up, little chunks of turkey or chicken, ) As long as she has most of her teeth you can give her anything, i know my daughter loved to eat noodles,

if your still fearfull that she is going to choke ...what i did was what ever we ate i put a little of everything into a blender ....might sound alful but my kids loved it!!!
