I'm not sure exactly what people were expecting from this movie but I, for one, went into it with no expectations. In other words, I wasn't expecting some great factual account a haunting that supposedly took place way back when. Maybe if I were more familiar with the history of the Bell Witch, I'd be more inclined to feel differently. But as that is not the case, I have to say that I enjoyed the movie. I really like suspense and this film had a whole lot of it. The way in which it was shot just sort of gave it a kind of eerie feel, which really added to the suspense. The actors, I thought, did a great job. And Rachel Hurd-Wood, especially, helped to bring the story to another level. I'm glad it wasn't the typical blood and guts horror movie.

I thought it was a creepy movie, that had silly acting at times. It was definitely suspenseful and entertaining though. I was enticed to the film, and jumped a few times also. I also love suspense films, and I though "An American Haunting" did a could job at accomplishing the suspense part of it. My only complaint was the silly acting by Rachel Hurd Wood (the girl-Betsy). That brought some laughs in the audience, but the rest was spooky, and suspenseful.

Being a Tennessean, I've read many accounts of John Bell and the story of the Bell witch and found the movie to be pretty accurate. It was very entertaining, but a bit stressful ( nearly had a heart attack a few times). I enjoyed it though and would recommend it as a good movie.

I didn't get to see it - the theaters here hustled it out after two weeks, unfortunately! - but now that I've read your take on it, I can't wait to see it!! Thanks for the info, I'm really looking forward to seeing this one now!
