My boyfriend just bought me 3 goldfish (2 fantails and a black moor). He grabbed goldfish pelletes instead of flakes. My two fantails gulp them in, but they spit them right back out. Is this normal?? My black moor doesn't seem to mind, he just eats them and goes on about his business lol. I bought flakes and they all seem to love them, but I just wanted to know if it was normal for them to be "picky" eaters.

It's normal.

Goldies are really prone to swimbladder problems especially if they are gulpers. They will take a lot of air in and it will mess up their bouyancy. If you feed flakes you should hold them below the surface of the water.

They will sink right to the bottom. Your goldies will get them on the way down or pick the food out of the gravel.

I know you didn't ask about it, but first time goldie owners don't realize how delicate these fish are.

Have fun and good luck!!!

Fish can be very picky eaters. If your goldfish were raised on flakes, chances are that is the only thing they will eat.

They will eventually get used to the pellets, if that is the only thing they are fed, but if they don't eat them, they will just clog up the water, so its best to feed them something they will eat. If flakes work, then its probably best to stick to them.
