My son is 8 months and has recently started to climb the stairs and I was wondering if 8 months is the time babies usually start that.

All babies develop at different rates. My son started climbing the stairs shortly before nine months. He's 11 months now and zips up them like nothing! He also tries to go down the stairs, and that's trouble! GL! (and get out your running shoes)

Every baby is different though there are averages for milestones. Some walk at 9 months, some don't walk until 18 months. Climbing is different too. Though it's not a milestone...it's a skill that can be learned anytime.

My son learned to climb up the stairs at 9 months and learned to climb down a month later. He started walking at 11 1/2 months.

Many babies start climbing stairs (and even horizontal climbing!!) as soon as they crawl. It is fairly common if you have stairs available for his to practice on.

once they can crawl it doesnt take them long to climb. put a baby gate at the top and bottom of your stairs now

i don't know the average age, but my son started climbing onto the counters, table and such at around the same age...he wasn't walking but he could climb onto the toilet, up onto the sink, and look at himself in the mirror.
