Vincent Van Gogh was insane and suffered from depression among other things.
Picasso was and I believe he actually contracted syphillis but he had major issues with female figures as can be seen in the piece Desmoisselles D'avignons
Fransico Goya had his problems and Dali certainly had his eccentricities and series issues.
Mark Rothko suffered severe depression and commited suicide
Jackson Pollock suffered from depression as well
Basquiat suffered from paranoia and struggle with drug addiction

Velazquez or Goya are super famous. El Greco was Greek but worked in Spain. F. Kahlo and D. Rivera were Mexican. Picasso, Salvador Dali, Joan Miró are world renowned 20th century painters. Miquel Barceló is world famous and still alive and painting.

Quite a number, actually. And those who weren't outright insane were often 'strange'. You could look at people like Martha Graham, and argue that her obsessive concern with dance was abnormal, and maybe it was, because most people aren't willing to give their lives to something that may or may not provide them with a living. In her case, it did, but not at the beginning. Dali was definitely out of it. Picasso is another odd bird. So I guess your question depends on what your definition of insane is.

depends on your level of insanity... most artists are very intelligent but look at problems from different angles than all others. However correct the final result might be, this way of thinking can be construed as not normal. so the answer would be most artists are insane. Creativity produces fantasy, I am proud to be living in the fantasy realm....

My favorite "insane" artist would have to be Francisco Goya...towards the end of his life he lost his hearing and gradually receded into seclusion. It's interesting to compare his earlier work, which is a bit rococo in style, with his later work, which is pretty terrifying.
And despite his "series issues," no, Salvador Dali was not insane.

Caravaggio killed someone with a knife. Activity in the arts does not train inhibition of emotional expression, and a high score in EE correlates well with pathology.
