Well, till next year comes either by weeding then using something like straw or a black weed sheet to keep new grass from coming up.
In the fall, you can plant annual rye grass. Make sure it is annual, not perennial. The rye grass will create a cover over the garden preventing any weeds from growing in it and keeping weed/grass seeds out. Till the rye grass into the ground in the early spring and it will become fertilizer for the ground. So it serves two purposes.

If you're considering planting a new lawn then there are 2 methods: either use a powerful herbicide (which could be rather expensive) OR use thick covers over the grass to block off the sun ray and the old grass will go dead in a short while and you can dig it out, change the soil and plant new grass.

Get a really big paddling pool. A couple of months with a paddling pool on top of it is enough to kill any grass. Plus, you have a cool paddling pool!
