First of all I am an accountant and I am not trying to sell anything.

Many of the commercials talk about home based businesses, which may be legitimate opportunities, but confuse the viewer into thinking any dummy can do them and get rich quick by showing tons of different people semmingly from different walks of life. There are hundreds of legitimate jobs you can do from your home and make money. However, most require some sort of skills or specific education.
Software designer
I have a close friend who is a computer programmer and software developer who for himself from home. But, he has extensive training and computer knowledge. He also spends about 8-10 hours a day on work and makes only slightly more than he would doing a similar job for a company.

Tax accountant
Many tax accountants meet people at their homes for the interview/consultation then prepare the returns at their own home. This is going to require tax accounting knowledge and experience. This can alos be a very seasonal business.

Medical coder
I have a hunch that this is the business that mnay of the infomercials are actually selling. The company I work for employs many home based medical coders. A medical coder receives patient records, determines the correct billing codes for the procedures documented, records them and returns the records to the doctor later. This usually requires you to be certified which is going mean getting some training. They also come into the office for about 8-16 hours per week. They do make good money, I think $15-25/hour.

Photographer
All of the wedding photographers my wife and I spoke with worked out of their homes but obviously had to go to events to ctake the pictures.

Cake Baker
Our wedding cake baker owns professional grade applicances and makes all of his cakes at his house while raising his kids.
