I have a hiatal hernia and a umbilical hernia and I was wondering if I exercised carefully my stomach muscles could it be possible that I could correct the hernia. The doctor said that a hernia is caused by a muscle being weak so I figure I can strengthen the muscle up. Am I right?

No you are not. A hiatal hernia is very common, and normally occurs in about 50% of adults. It might cause belching and reflux. You can control this by not lying down immediately after a meal and do not eat 2 hrs. before you go to bed. It's very uncommon for surgery to be performed on this type of hernia.

An umbilical hernia needs to be repaired as no amount of exercise will cure it. It is a tear in your abdominal muscles. You can make it worse/bigger by extreme exercise or you might cause injury to your intestines which will come through the tear. Make arrangements with your doc to have it repaired. Very common surgery and slight discomfort. No biggie.

Well my daughter had an umbilical herna when she was born and it went away on its own after 3 months with no help at all.

I had a hernia from pushing out my baby, near my hip. It fixed itself as well.

I think it would depend on the level of pain you are in, but most doctors say if its not massively painful, to wait it out.
