So far Cooley is the only correct response.

The term was coined after Ohio State's (and current St. Louis Rams Pro Bowl Tackle) Orlando Pace in the mid-late 90's. He was so dominaing that he would go against a defensive player and they would be on their back "flat as a pancake" with him on top (he also weighed in at over 300 lbs in College).

The stat was "officially" kept upon his Jr. Year of College.

A pancake is a block by ANY player on offense, where they knock an opposing defender to the ground during a play. It is a stat the is mainly recorded to offensive linemen and fullbacks.

It's one of those stats for offensive lineman.

In American football, a pancake block denotes the flattening (pushing to the ground) of an opposing lineman by a blocker.

Hmmmmmmm, I've been a football fan for years and I'm not sure I've ever heard this term.

But I THINK it might refer to when 2 defensive players squish an offensive player (like a pass receiver) between them and make a "pancake" out of him.

When an offensive lineman takes the defensive player to the ground and basically lays on him to eliminate him from the play.

it's when someone hits someone so hard, they fall on their back. Like when you flip a pancake on a stove top, it lands on the back, that's why they call it that.
