It depends on the situation, my husband and I have been invited out to dinner with another couple, and the bill was split. We've been invited out by friends on our anniversary and let them pick up the tab. It all depends on what the circumstances are. Below is a link to a great article that might help you!! :)

According to Rhonda Stipes, well known manners specialist, if you invite a couple specifically for having dinner - YOU pick up the tab. Splitting the tab is a no-no when the intent was dinner. Now if you guys are hanging out and someone says "I'm hungry, let's grab a bite" then it is okay for each to pay their own way. Hope this helps. - You're probably pretty classy (in a good way) just for pondering the question!

It depends on how the other couple is asked.
If you tell them you want to TAKE THEM OUT to dinner you are implying that you are treating them. If you do not intend to treat, you say- "Let's go out to dinner some time, DUTCH TREAT". That sends a clear message that you want to eat with the other couple but are not treating them. It's all in the wording of the question.
If a clear message is not sent beforehand, one could could end up spending a lot of money on meals that they did not intend to pay for.

Why would they have to pick up the tab. Maybe they just want to hang out and talk while sharing a meal. Isn't that what friends do? If my friend and I go out to lunch and she suggests it I don't assume she will pay and vice versa

Speaking from personal experience...whenever I do the inviting, I pick up the tab... if they offer to pay, just say "I'll get this one...next time you can buy". Hope this helped.

Really? - Classy?--If you are really friends with another couple, then they do not expect you to pay. If you do great, but you don't know their financial situation. Pay for your own dinner!!

when its 2 couples id expect them 2 split the bill evenly irrospective of what was eaten and had to drink, that way alls fair although if a guy asks a girl out he should pay...the first time atleast! it sets a good standard in my opinion

I pick up the tab, it's just the right thing to do.

I think that unless they specifically say "We're taking you two out for dinner", assume that you will be paying for your own meal.

It's expensive enough for one couple to go out to dinner nowadays, that you shouldn't expect someone to foot the whole bill for 4 people.

If they are paying, I would offer to help out, or to leave the tip.

I've never had expected a couple to pay for my dinner if they ask me to have dinner. I've never had another couple ask me to dinner and offer to pay. I don't think it is a class issue. I don't think its done.
