It is a passed down tradition from other footballers before them. And their teammates run after them anyway right?

If you're more concerned about scoring goals as a CM maybe you should be playing striker instead. When I play CM I'm not even thinking about scoring goals, I'm thinking draw the defense to me and laying the ball off or making sure the other team doesn't have a chance to launch a counter attack. Goals will come, not as often. The role of a CM is to set up great plays, direct the pace of the team and make sure that opponents can't take the ball off of you.
