Depends on your taste: Punta del Este is the super famous one, but it's really touristy and in high season it's rammed full of deck chairs. I would recommend a place called Cabo Polonio - it's more difficult to get to (you go in a truck!), but it has a "wilder" look to it and a more backpacker feel (well this was three years ago, hopefully it hasn't developed too much!). Sea lions too, and huts selling artesanias.

Yeah, Punta Del Este is the wild young rich scene, Cabo Polonio is more the the wild natural scene.
If you would like an in-between area, try La Paloma, it has a night life and still has lots of natural wonder. There is even a 'camping' area with cute little cottages. It is also not far from Rocha, the department seat or capital that has a wonderful history and great artisan shops. Neither is too far from the two great forts- La Fortaleza Santa Teresa and La Fortaleza de San Miguel. La Paloma is the best bet money wise, you can have both worlds and the people are great with tourists.

Like comradeluise suggests, depending upon your taste either Cabo Polonio or Punta del Este would be your best bet. The latter is where lots of wealthy tourists go, especially Argentines, for the summer. It is reminiscent of Miami Beach. Many Uruguyans have summer homes along the coast leading out of Montevideo. During the south American summer, the city vacates as everyone heads out to the beach for in many cases several months. If you enjoy culture, the Uruguyan Carnival season is lively and very different than the Brazilian or Trini style. The city of Monteivideo has several events associated with it, drum parades, murgas (political street theatre, my favorite experience in Uruguay), and the city is alive with festivity. Best time to go is Jan-Feb in my opinion. Rest of the year is quite dreary, wet, cold, and windy.
I've included a link on the Uruguayan Murga.

there is nothing like punta del este at the beginning of january. the beautiful people hang out there and the scene can be hot. any other resorts are second rate compared to punta del este. they may be fine if you're with the family, but if you're looking for excitement, punta is it.
