Chuck--just give me your philosophy of why to study history. Jeez can't take a little Marley?

It gives you perspective. It gives you a chance to learn from other's mistakes. However YOU are not part of history, YOU are making history. Your ancestors and cultural forces are only a part of you, your direct experience and your own personal thoughts are unique.

NB - 'coming from' has both a literal and a figurative sense, I'm focusing on the figurative sense, meaning understanding yourself.

As has been said before, History is written by the winners. You will know what the victorious made of earlier life. This is mostly with refernce to rule and politics

Perhaps if you studied the history of philosophy and art you get a more esoteric inspiring picture, but I don't belive any historical document can be taken purely at face value

When it pertains to your initial history, at the time of birth, you have to take the word of others. Or, you have to find an alternate way to "see" it.

Not entirely but you will know why you fail if indeed you know your history and you will know why its important to know where you need to go.
