I don't think that the dog thinks the door is for him, I think that he just wants to get at the person behind the door, either to attack that person, so to seek some attention.

It's a type of psychological conditioning... every time the doorbell goes you go and answer it... the dog thinks this is the correct response and copies you. If you gave him negavtive feedback each time he ran to the door, for exaample shouting at him, he would then associate the doorbell with being told off and stop going there. This type of conditioning can be used on animals and humans.

Probably because the ringer on the doorbell is that particular sound wave that drives them crazy. Much like opening a refrigerator and having a guniea pig squeal (yes, mine actually did that) or a cat going crazy when they hear a can opener.

A dog is really cognizant of his surroundings. When the doorbell rings, he doesn't think its for him, its a new thing being introduced into his area, that's why he goes to check it out. Unless of course, you have the pizza guy on your speed dial, then , maybe, it is for him.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

It usually IS for him. If it's someone who is coming into the house they usually say Hi to the dog and give him a pat.

He doesn't think it's for him he just wants to find out who it is because he feels like the house is his territory and he needs to protect it.
