It is caused by the movement of large plates on the earth's crust. When these plates move into each other it causes a collision, which basicallly push them together - hence the reason for all the Mountains out west - 2 plates pushed together caused the ends to go up...hence mountains...but when these plates move you get the shaking, thus causing an earthquake.

plate tectonics. The crust of the Earth is broken up. If you have a good globe, just follow the fault lines. There is one in the Pacific. The West Coast of the U.S. ( San Andreas fault line ), the Great Rift of Africa. There is also one along the East Coast if the U.S., but, that one hasn't been very active. There are also others under the sea.

Anyway. An earthquake is when one plate moves either over, under or rubs against another plate.

Do a search on plate tectonics and you will have more than you need.

Earthquakes are caused by plate tectonics. There are large plates under the earth's surface that are constantly shifting and moving. When they rub against each other a friction is caused. If the friction builds up enough, then an earthquake can occur. Plates shifting into each other basically happens three different ways: they slam into each other (convergent), they slip along each other (transform) or they spread apart (divergent). Any of these can cause earthquakes. Also, try looking it up on Wikipedia.com, they are a good, quick encyclopedia-style website with lots of good information.

An earthquake happens when the magma under the earth cause the plates of the earth to collide or slide under each other. When this happens a simple or catastrophic earthquake happens. Where the plates collide is usually where the epicenter is. After a earthquake there are usually aftershocks. The aftershocks are usually no as bad as the earthquake itself

An earthquake is a sudden shaking or disturbance of the earth's surface caused by movements in the earth's outer layer. Energy, which naturally occurs within the earth, becomes disturbed or strained (creating a fault), and releases itself, causing the violent shaking that we define as an earthquake.

phenomenon that results from and is powered by the sudden release of stored energy that radiates seismic waves. At the Earth's surface, earthquakes may manifest themselves by a shaking or displacement of the ground and sometimes tsunamis, which may lead to loss of life and destruction of property.

Earthquakes may occur naturally or as a result of human activities. In its most generic sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event—whether a natural phenomenon or an event caused by humans—that generates seismic waves.

The earth consists of what's called Tectonic plates which are under the ground. The plates are slowing moving with time. When they clash, it causes an earthquake.

One purpose of homework is to teach you how to find answers, either from your reading assignment, lecture notes, or research. Asking someone else for the answer is cheating you out of the skills you should be developing for success.
