It's not a really bad job, but A) it's hard readjusting to being scheduled long shifts after being out of work for a bit, and B) I'm bitter because I have a B.A. in English and was forced to take a retail job out of desperation. How do I not hate my job so much?

LOL...get used to it! Tons of us have degrees in one field but are forced to work other jobs. Just remember it's a temporary stepping stone. Be happy that you have a way to pay your bills and have some spending money. In the meantime, keep your eyes/ears open for that "dream job".

If you do your best at whatever job you have, and keep a positive attitude (esp. in retail), then when you do find that dream job, you will always have great references and experience to draw upon. You never know when you'll meet the right person, or end up in the right situation.

But if you go through your job with a stinky attitude and hating it, you may end up stuck there, or fired...and both of those options suck.

Most of us degrees or not hate the first day on a job. I guess because it's sorta like the first day at a new school. Your the new kid on the block, not sure if you'll fit in, etc. By having a degree and being in a field you really don't want to be in makes you feel kinda awkward or like your smarter than those around you. Don't feel that you taking a job that's not in your field as that of desperation, but rather for survival reasons. You gotta eat! Look at it from this point of view, this job is a stepping stone right now. I'm sure that by the time summer is over and you've posted your resume on monsterjobs.com you'll have many offers to choose from at the right time. Patience is a virtue and perhaps the job that's right for you isn't available now, but when the times right, it'll come to you! Good luck and God Bless!

P.S. Since your in retail the upside is your employee discount, especially if it's clothes!

I think you hate your job so much because it's not what you want to be doing. I've had LOTS of these kind of jobs in the past and I dreamed of getting out. I have even had jobs where I would sit in my car and would have to talk myself into going inside! It would have been so easy to just drive off and never look back, and instead I had to reach down deep and pull out everything I had to get out of my car and go inside to work. I'm lucky now--the place I work at now is BY FAR the best job I've ever had. Even though it's not what I want to be doing, it's a place I love to go to and a job I wouldn't mind working for years and years.

Some advice--even though you have a job now you can still look for something better. You hate this job, keep looking. But don't quit the job you have now until you find something else....it'll look better to a possible employer if you are still working.

Good luck, and hope you find your dream job!

That's just how it is. On my first day of working in a hospital/college, I was pissed cuz I hated everything and I was cold and I wanted to see my boyfriend. I guess it all depends on what's going on in your life that makes on loathe the first day of working.
