I think the theme is that even though we may have wasted our lives away, at some point we can make it up and be of some significance by giving to others. I suppose it can be summed up as Salvation.

Wonderful story. Spoiled rich brat was given a test to see if he was worthy of a major inheritance. He looked for ways to satisfy the test, not realizing the big inheritance hinged on it. In the end he did the only truly great thing he ever did in his life.

I also enjoyed O Henry (William Sydney Porter)'s Confessions of a Five Spot, where a five-dollar bill, won in a card game, tells a story of where he's been, and other currency notes it meets along the way. I loved the story of the twenty and the one telling of where they have been. The twenty had been to fancy restaurants and hotels, but the one kept going "to church and to church."

selfless nature of true love. we do not love someone so they love us back, we love them unconditionally without the expectation of reciprocation. Although it seems like an extremely notion, i think the writer wanted to show that love is not selfish.
there can be as much joy in giving as in receiving, this is another thing that comes to mind.
