Price to sell (detach emotionally if you really want to get rid of stuff & move it fast).

Use price stickers wherever possible (people really don't like to ask, "How much is it?").

Put a free ad on Craigslist.

Print out signs to distribute through the neighborhood (mark clearly if directions are needed).

Make sure you have at least one other person to assist you (for bathroom breaks, grabbing lunch, etc.)

Don't hard sell your customers & just let 'em browse. Be friendly & offer to help if they have any questions.

Be decisive but flexible. If you want 'em to make an offer, be reasonable.

If you don't want to haul everything back into the house at the end of the day, start slashing your prices at least two hours before the end of the sale.

Give away what you really don't want. If someone buys a lot of stuff, offer to throw in a couple of freebies.

1) have stuff that people want to buy - kid's toys and clothes, antiques, furniture, sporting goods, whatever sells in your market.

2) make it more inviting for people to come to your sale by getting neighbors to hold sales that same day/weekend. Veteran garage sailors will be more likely to come if there are several sales located in a cluster.

3) advertise in the local paper

4) put up signs to help people navigate that last mile to find you.

5) don't keep large amounts of cash in a cash box that can be picked up and stolen. Go down to the local lumber yard or hardware store and ask for a cheap nail apron. They may be only a dollar, and they'll let you keep change, etc in a more secure place.

the answer is simple* organization * first take all the steps to having the things you stand to profit from resonably priced, try not to put out too many things you kinda feel you would still like (you tend to put a price that is just not reasonable on things you still want, which scares people away), be sure you look into the weather for the day you plan to sell, and once you have the details of the when and where worked out, the most important step is advertising, do this with fliers, local paper, the net, and a lot of networking

Make sure you have lots of change handy. People LOOOVE to come with $20 bills. If you don't have change, no sale. Put signs up on each of your street corners with arrows. Clearly price all your items. People hate having to ask how much everything is.

Place brightly colored signs at both ends of your street...place a couple of high interest items at the front sides of your set up...start early...advertise in your local paper and on stores bulletin boards...price things fairly, but not at your bottom dollar, people like to talk you down and feel like they got a deal. Good luck.
