I am in the very early stages, just looking at plans and I would like an idea of what kind of budget I need to be working with.

Don't worry about national averages. Find out what your local costs will be. Different regions have different costs. Climate, land values, and local labor rates all affect the cost of building a house. Colder climates have codes that require the house not only be insulated from winter cold, but be able to bear the weight of a load of snow on the roof. Urban areas usually have higher land values and higher labor costs. Check out a Realtor or lumber yard for some good local numbers.

About $125 to $150 a square foot in our area but you need to check where you are because it varies greatly by region.

It is a rough estimate but just about $60 a square foot.

it really depends on the house u want to build. here on the east coast, 1200 - 1800 mid range house( no hardwood, medium priced everything) runs about $ 120.00 per ft. i'm building one right now that is cost the homeowner $ 140.00 per. in some areas here it runs $ 200.00 per ft. ( high end homes )
