I'm not sure if I should go ahead and purchase, or if it is likely to go down more. And I have searched pretty much every airfare search site and also gone directly to each airline's official site and that was the best price I found with a decent flight schedule (Jet Blue was cheaper, but terrible flight times)

That is a good fare. I just looked at over 231 fares from all the major carriers and only got 473 so i would say your super sleuthing is paying off! Have fun in the DR, i want to climb Pico Duarte when i get there next year!

I just returned from Punta Cana....did a lot of research on fares before i booked...got direct flights both ways on American Airlines from JFK (NYC) for $475.....sounds like the rate you listed is a good deal. I don't think the price will drop by the time you are looking to go.
