I believe there is some truth to that. Companies have to have so many of their customers GPS capatible every year. Like 50% in the year 2004, 75% in 2005 and 100% in 2006. These, I am sure are not exactly right, but I think that is how they had to do it.

Not sure if it is a law, but all cell phones in the US are required to be GPS enabled. When making a 911 emergency calls before, the agency handling the call did not know, in many cases, the location of the caller. With GPS enabled, the dispatcher knows where to send the emergency crews or other help that is needed.

i don't know if it's a law but i think i heard that all the new phones are being made with GPS capabilities now.

Not that I'm aware of. Mine sure as he11 doesn't have GPS capabilities! (bought less than 2 years ago)

No. BUT, companies such as Verizon Wireless that use the CDMA technology have GPS chips.

yes and they wont activate an old phone with out one, only if you have had one active during the change as i did, though i am getting a new one this week
