it is most likely a problem with ur idle air control (iac) valve - possibly sticking. the computer in your car opens this valve to increase the idle speed of the engine to compensate for the load put on it when u turn on the ac compressor. this compensation shouldnt be to much higher then 1000 rpm, if so then u might need to chance the iac valve.

The a/c uses a idle switch to increase idle speed for proper operation. When the car is in gear already, this won't matter as you are driving. While stopped however, if this high idle speed is occurring, do not shift into gear. The engine idle speed should not be higher then winter time idle speed if memory serves.
