Each lugnut is glued to the hub over each lug hole with weatherstripping (or "yellow") glue. This glue stays flexible and takes forever to harden yet it is strong enough to keep the lugnut there until the wheel is slid onto the hub.
Each lug is about an inch longer than your standard lug with that extra inch turned down to about 3/16 of an inch smaller than the interior of the lugnut.
So when the wheel is slid onto the hub and the holes are slid over the lugs, as the lugnut hits the threads it is forced loose from the wheel but remains hanging on that extended inch of narrower lug. The extra deep socket slides over the lugnut and it is twisted on with the air wrench. Occasionally the wheel will go on crooked enough to make a lugnut fall off the extended lug and that is when you see the changer scrambling for another lugnut

They do have lugnuts holding the tire on. The gun is not preloaded, it can't be, the car has the lugnuts on it. On pitstops, there is a guy who jacks the car, one who removes the nuts, one who puts on the tire and the guy who removed the nuts goes around and does them over again. Some teams have two guys per side, where one guy would remove nuts, one put tire on and replace nuts, and then the guys with the airgun would go and tighten the lugs.

the lug nuts are super glued to the hole opening. When the air drill connects with it it breaks the seal and the nut is then tight! Simple isn't it!

yep and it's rather cool. I got myself a cold garage pass and pit pass and saw the crew glueing them on each hole in the rim. Didn't know that before then. =)

They are glued to the rim. Once they all come off, the tire comes off.
