I need some information about birth control I have a prescription for it, but I am sort of confused, I know that it tricks the body to think you are pregnant, and it doesn't help with STD's or HIV, but you take a different pill for one week, are you on your period that week or do you not have a period at all. This is kind of embarassing since I know I should know this, but I have always been a little confused. Thanks for your help, serious answers only please!:)

Ok, enough about my age...I am plenty old enough. And mature, thanks!

Also, does it matter if I take it in the morning or at night? Or just as long as it is the same time everyday?

This is in response to Nichole's answer.....

She suggested that you can skip the last 7 days of your pill and start a new pill pack to only get your period once every 3 months. This is okay to do, but make sure that you talk to your doctor about it because they need to know you're using your pills this way to make sure you get enough refills for it. Or there is a brand name pill that already does this for you. It's called Seasonale.

Also, important things to remember about your birth control pill! Take them everyday at the same time of day so that you can keep a steady level of hormone in your body - this will keep the effectiveness level at it's highest. Using another form of birth control (condoms or spermicide) as a back up for at least the first month of use is a good idea while your body is getting used to the pill. You are correct that it doesn't protect against STDs and HIV so make sure you get tested with your partner(s) and use condoms to protect yourself.

Hope this info helps!

that one week that is different are placebo pills. They make those so that you do not forget to take your pills daily. since there are no hormones in these pills it will prompt your peroid to start. It might take a couple of months to become regular. You can also skip these 7 pills and start a new pack which will make you skip your period. You should only do this for 3 months at a time and have a perios the fourth month. Make sure that you use alternate forms of birht control your first month on. You wont be completely covered until you start your second pill pack

If you hop on the web and look into posting that question on a medical website you can get a more informed answer; or you could call the doc (or a nurse) who prescribed the contraceptive and ask away. The should have no problems answering your questions. Different pills work in different ways, so your best bet is to try and talk to the doc or practitioner who saw you. Failing that, call a Planned Parenthood clinic (I hope you are old enough, by the way) and ask to have one of the RN's there explain it to you.

What you are asking is not dumb-no need to beat yourself up for trying to understand what you are taking or what it will do to your body. I wish more women had your guts.

You take a pill everyday. You have 4 weeks of pills. The first set of 3 weeks you are not on your period. The last set you should be on or getting you period. I have heard that the last set of pills (usually a different color) is just sugar pills and you do not have to take them. However, it is a very good idea to take them to keep you on track. Also as a reminder the pill takes about 3 months to take full effect.

You do a have a period during the week of the different color pills and it does not protect you from STD's and if you start to feel sick it's only because your body is not use to it.

Good luck!!!

there should be two different colored pills. One color for the first 4 weeks, then another color for the last week of the month. The pills that are the different color should enable you to get your period. They don't protest against STD's or HIV!

Yes you have your period that week that you are off the regular pills. It doesn't matter what time of the day as long as you are regular (ie always at night or always the morning). I always kept it in my makeup bag so I'd remember.

You need some serious education about your body. Anonymous replies to your question are not going to be of real help. You need to be able to askk questions about anything that confuses you. If you are old enough to be sexually active, you must be informed and secure in what you know.
Talk to the doctor who wrote your prescription.
