Sunscreen and babies?

Question

a) do we put it on top of normal moisturiser?

b) can i put it on her face (its blue!)

Yes you can put it on babys face, but it might be better to use a sunscreen that is not coloured, just in case she has a reaction to the colour. Normally you would not put sunscreen on top of moisturiser

You didn't mention age, but remember that sunscreen is only approved for babies 6 months and over. Under 6 months they simply must stay in the shade.

If she is 6 months or older, then yes definitely put it on her face. But still try to minimize sun exposure and wear a hat or stay in the shade as much as possible. Try to avoid moisurizer and sunscreen together because it will dilute the sunscreen. Just stick with the sunscreen only on days she will be outside, or wait and put moistureizer on at night, or well before you put the sunscreen on. Remember to re-apply it according to the directions, ESPECIALLY after getting out of the water - even if it says "waterproof".

Don't worry about what your baby looks like, your first priority must be protection.


A minimum factor 40 or 50 spf would be sufficient for your baby, you can buy specially formulated sunscreens from most manufacturers that are designed for infants. also ensure that your baby wears a sunhat and is shaded from direct sunlight at all times. The sunscreens are usually like paint the higher the factor you go, I used a green one on my son when he was a baby and he looked like the incredible hulk, but rather he look like that than get sunburned or skin cancer.

The moisturiser or baby lotion may effect the sunscreen, so better to leave it off. Keep applying the sunscreen to your baby throughout the day and wash it all off at night and then apply your babies usual skin care routine after a bath.

Best answer is of course to keep her out of the sun if possible, especially for 6 months or less. But sometimes that's impossible. So look for ones that are not chemical sunscreens (ie Hawaiian Tropics tanning lotion) but are more like zinc oxide sun blockers. Is it "blue" when it goes on and then fades? Some of the blockers do that so you can make sure you're getting it everywhere, and that should be OK to use.

I would not put it on top of normal moisturizer, I'd use it instead of.

I bought baby sun screen from tesco that says 6 month + only so I can't use it my baby is only 3 months.

There is a johnsons sun screen for babys but i'm not sure if that is for babies less than 6 months either.

I just keep my baby out of direct sunlight with sun hats and sun canopy on his pram.

From what I understand, you can't use it on babies under 6 months old. Put in on like normal moisturizer. There is no need to put on a separate moisturizer on first.

I wouldn't use it over a normal moisurizer, and they make special sunblock for the face. It comes in a tube, looks kind of like a glue stick. I think that is safer, since it won't run into the eyes.

you can apply it directly to her skin and yes it can go on her face...i have 2 children the youngest being 11 months and have been using sunscreen since she was 2 months old

yes it is fine to put a little on babys face just keep away from eyes and with sun block you dont need to put extra moisturizers on baby till after there baths

Put it everywhere on babies if they are going to be in the sun but try keep them out of the sun.
