I dont think someone can just erase your drives.

Try going into your BIOS settings and make sure you are adding the drivers so that your computer can detect them.

Or go to control panel and then click on ADD/REMOVE hardware and let your computer detect them. They cant just disappear or get deleted unless you do a reformat and you didnt partition correctly.

If all the above didn't work... then the devices may be disabled.. to enable them :
Right Click on "My Computer"->Properties->"Hardware" tab->Device Manager->Click the "+" beside "DVD\CD-Rom drives"->
Right Click the device you want ->Properties-> in the bottom of the opened windows choose "Use this device (enable) "..

Use the Win98 start up disk to load your cd drivers.
Just put the floppy in the drive and restart the computer and fallow the prompt.
