My steps on helping you I am a makeup artist so here you go:

How to choose eye shadow color:

Your eyes are the windows to your soul. Make them come alive with a touch of shadow on the lids.

Steps:

1. Shop for shades that complement your skin and eye color. Look for colors that softly contrast with the shade of your eyes - not colors that match them exactly.

2. Choose simple, natural shades. If you opt for bright or trendy colors, be careful; they can look unnatural unless balanced with other suitable tones, and may go out of style as fast as they came in.

3. Buy colors that blend well together. You want your eyes to attract the attention, not any marked lines caused by your shadow.

4. Keep in mind that dark colors will minimize your eyes, while light shades will make them stand out.

5. Consider soft browns and tans with sandy or pink undertones for blue eyes.

6. Wear khaki and brown shades with yellow undertones for green eyes.

7. Accent dark brown and black eyes with brown and charcoal shadows.

8. Experiment. Head to a department store's cosmetic counter and have your eyes made up by a professional. Ask for color combinations that could work for day and evening.

Sweep a touch of shadow over your lids to accent eyes. You can define them, add drama, and make them stand out in a few quick steps.

Application on Entire Lid

Steps:

1. Prime the eyelids by dusting them with a small amount of loose powder.

2. Select a light base shadow. Using a shadow brush, sweep it across your entire lid, from brow to lash line.

3. Use a medium-toned shade to cover your lower lids.

4. Contour the crease of your eyelid with a dark shade, using a smaller eye shadow brush. This color can also work as an eyeliner (see the next section for instructions).

5. Blend shadow by stroking the lid gently with an eye shadow brush. Don't use your finger'you could wipe off the shadow entirely.

6. Use a cosmetic puff and a little pressed powder to tone down heavy shadow. Shake any excess powder off the puff, then press it gently on your lid.

Eye Shadow to Line the Eyes

Steps:

1. Choose a medium or dark shadow color to line your eyes.

2. Use a small, flat, angled brush for the application.

3. Stroke the brush over the eye shadow.

4. Start at the inside edge of your upper lid. Angle the brush so that the longest tip follows the shorter end as the brush moves across your lash line. Bring the brush to the outer corner of the eye.

5. Create a more dramatic line by wetting the brush before stroking it through the shadow. Mist a small amount of water onto the brush, or dab it into a few drops of water and proceed with the line. The shadow may feel wet as you draw your line, but it will dry quickly.

I hope that helps.

Question
I'm new to the make-up world --I only ever wear mascara-- but I'd really like to try some eye shadow. A friend of mine told me all about application techniques, but I do have a question about selection: what colors would work best for me? I have brown hair and eyes that are usually blue. Usually, because they can change slightly (to almost gray, light blue, deep blue, purplish) depending on clothing and light. Are they any shades that will look nice no matter what hue my eye color decides to be that day? And is it okay to match your eyeshadow to what you're wearing?

Answer
Hi Chris! Welcome to makeup! there are hundreds of options for you as far as eyeshadow goes. For blue eyes, you can't go wrong with greys or browns. Anything with an orange base (peach, copper, terracotta, etc) will make your eyes appear more blue. Navy blue will make your eyes appear more grey. Yellows (gold, champagne, etc) will bring out violet/purple tones. And reds (plum, rose, etc) will bring out green tones. Be careful with the red tones, too much around the eyes can make you look sickly, and many people are allergic to red dye. Always start with a light, neutral, shade all over ( like an ivory or cream color) this will make all other colors blend easier. A medium shade would be next, from the lashes to the crease, blend the lines. Your darkest color (or pencil) should go along the lashes. And follow with mascara. For a simple look, just apply a medium shade along lashes and add mascara. To keep eye pencil from smudging, blend over it with a close shade of shadow. You can match your shadow to your clothes, the main thing is that you don't want your shadow colors to compete with your eye color. Good luck, let me know if you have more questions. Sincerely, Betty

I do it differently than most women but I like the way it looks bes it works well on me because I have high eyebrows I start with a light color and put it all the way up to my eyebrow very lightley then I take a darker shade of that same color and start at the eyelashes then it gets lighter untill it hits the brow bone and it then stops it should blend together nicley and get from dark to light going up. It tends to be ver suddle and brings out natrul beauty instead of covering it up. It looks good an people with high eyebrows

in general, use three colors- usually you can find a set with three or more, and better if they are just different intensities of a similar color.
1. apply the lightest shade all over your eyelid and a little past it
2. apply the medium shade on the upper part of your eyelid
3. apply the darkest shade in the crease- what is covered when you open your eyes widely
hope this helps! many cosmetic brands have an illustration on the back or online for help.

Have 3 colors from the same family tree.
Apply the medium shade first on the whole of your eyelid.
The apply the darkest shade on the crease of your eye.
Finish it off with the lightest shade, applied right on the top to highlight your brow bone.
Check out Maybelline's website to watch a video on how to do it. It may seem more clear to watch it than to tell you just like that.

Hope you might get better at it. Just keep practicing.

Here is my suggestion: Try applying a light, preferably light pink shadow, like Almay to your upper lid. Apply this shade to your brow bone. Then apply a darker shade in the shape of < or > to the upper outer corner of your eyes. This will make create a nice look.

try putting just a little frosty shadow along the edge of top lid. Like a pale pink ,with mascara its a perfect summer look.

Too much eye shadow I think looks weird anyway,

I would say that if you suck at it, skip the eyeshadow all together or just use an extremely light color that is fool proof that you can just smudge on your lids with your fingers. Pick a matte beige color or one with only a very slight shimmer that flatters the colors of your hair/eye color and skin tone.

Try darker color on lid to corner, and a lighter color above to brow. Like a chocolate brown/cream color duo. You can usually buy these coordinating colors at any store.
